A RITUAL FOR RELIGIOUS PEACE AND TOLERANCE

By Kathe Walters, Elder Priestess,
Covenant of the Goddess, Los Angeles, CA
Before casting the Circle, ask attendees if they are willing to read a prayer from a different faith tradition during the ritual. Distribute printed copies of the prayers, with lyrics for the song/chant and the Declaration on the back.
Cast Circle (“Lady Weave Your Circle Tight” & “Lord, Lord, Guide Us”)

Call Quarters:
EAST:
I call upon the Spirits of the East, Powers of Air,
and ask for your blessings on our Circle.
Fill our minds with the image of a world at peace.
Let us see it so vividly that peace manifests on this Earth today and for all days to come!
Powers of Air, be welcome in our Circle.
ALL: Hail and Welcome!

SOUTH:
I call upon the Spirits of the South, Powers of Fire,
and ask for your blessings on our circle.
Fill our hearts with desperate longing for peace and freedom for all people,
Let our flame burn so brightly that the world catches fire with our passion!
Powers of Fire, be welcome in our Circle.
ALL: Hail and welcome!

WEST:
I call upon the Spirits of the West, Powers of Water,
and ask for your blessings on our Circle.
Fill our dreams with visions of peace and compassion;
Let these visions fill the astral until all who dream, dream of peace!
Powers of Water, be welcome in our Circle.
ALL: Hail and welcome!

NORTH:
I call upon the Spirits of the North, Powers of Earth,
and ask for your blessings on our Circle.
Fill us with the strength to live lives of peace and tolerance;
Let our commitment to non-violence spread from root to branch and into every life!
Powers of Earth, be welcome in our Circle.
ALL: Hail and welcome!

HPS: (Reads aloud)
In 1993 at the Parliament of the Worlds Religions, a document was put forward called
Toward a Declaration of a Global Ethic. Here are excerpts from that document which describe the story;
a story that we are here to write a new ending to.. The preamble to the Declaration begins:

“The world is in agony. The agony is so pervasive and urgent that we are
compelled to name its manifestations so that the depth of this pain may be made clear.
Peace eludes us ... the planet is being destroyed ... neighbors live in fear ...
women and men are estranged from each other ... children die!

This is abhorrent!”
To change the world, we must each change ourselves. Our only hope for peace
on this planet is in living peaceful lives, and supporting peaceful actions in others.
To that end, we make this declaration:
(Everyone reads aloud):

We Declare:...

That we are interdependent. Each of us depends on the well- being of the whole
, and so we have respect for the community of living beings, for people,
animals, and plants, and for the preservation of Earth, the air, water and soil.

We declare:

That we take individual responsibility for all we do. All our decisions,
actions, and failures to act have consequences. We accept these consequences,
and vow to learn from them.

We declare:

That we shall treat others as we wish others to treat us. We make a commitment to respect life
and dignity, individuality and diversity, so that every person is treated humanely, without exception.
We will be tolerant. We will show compassion. We will close the book on hatred.

We declare:

That every person shall have an equal chance to reach full potential as a human being.
We shall speak and act to ensure that every person has the opportunity to freely develop his or her humanity.
We pledge to increase our awareness by disciplining our minds, by meditation, by prayer, by raising energy for this vision of the world, or by positive thinking. We commit ourselves to understanding one another, and to socially beneficial, peace-fostering, and nature-friendly ways of life.

We declare:

That our words have power; the power to transform the minds and hearts of every living person. We declare that our work here tonight shall spread to the ends of the Earth, and that peace between peoples of every faith shall come.
By the power of three times three, as we will it, so shall it be;
As we will it, so shall it be; as we will it, SO SHALL IT BE!

HPS:
In the spirit of religious peace and tolerance, we honor people of other faith traditions.
(The prayers will be read aloud by the attendees who agreed to do so)

We honor our brothers and sisters in the Shinto faith with a prayer in their tradition:

Shinto Peace Prayer
Although the people living across the ocean
surrounding us are all our brothers and sisters,
Why, Oh Lord, is there trouble in this world?
Why do winds and waves rise in the ocean surrounding us?
I earnestly wish the wind will soon blow away
all the clouds hanging over the tops of the mountains.

HPS: We honor our Jain sisters and brothers with a prayer in their tradition

Jain Prayer
May Happiness Behold All;
May Distress Come Near None;
Giving up Hatred, Sin & Pride,
May the World Pour Forth One;
Continuous Eternal Peal of Delight;
May Dharma Become Common Language;
May Evil Cease To Be Easily Wrought;
May We Realize the Purpose of Life - Moksha!

HPS: We honor our brothers and sisters in the Native American Nations with a Chippewa prayer:

A Vision of Hope - Chippewa
We pray that someday an arrow will be broken,
not in something or someone, but by each of human kind,
to indicate peace, not violence.
Someday, oneness with creation,
rather than domination over creation,
will be the goal to be respected.
Someday fearlessness to love and make a difference
will be experienced by all people.
Then the eagle will carry our prayer for peace and love
